Two Of The Best Reasons To Buy British American Tobacco plc Today

Investors in British American Tobacco have seen their shares and their dividend payouts double in value since August 2007, during which time the FTSE 100 has gained just 6%.
This kind of performance is impressive by any standards, but is especially good given that the tobacco industry is supposed to be in a long-term decline — so what’s going on?

The world’s most profitable industry?

One of the benefits of selling a mature product like cigarettes is that you don’t have to spend much money on R&D. Your customers are already addicted, and do not want or expect anything to change.
BAT owns several of the world’s biggest cigarette brands, and smokers in emerging markets will pay a premium for these brands, allowing BAT to take market share from local brands, without sacrificing pricing power — the holy grail of profitability.
During the first six months of this year, BAT’s operating margin rose to 37%, up from 35.3% last year. The firm targets a 0.5-1.0% increase in operating margin each year, and margin growth, coupled with share buybacks, have enabled BAT’s earnings per share to rise steadily, despite falling volumes.
Of course, the process of extracting more profit from fewer sales will reach a limit eventually, but BAT sold 694bn cigarettes last year, so I don’t think it’s anywhere near the limit yet.

A replacement for tobacco?

Electronic cigarettes — also known as vaporisers — have become increasingly popular in western markets over the last few years.
To be honest, I didn’t realise just how popular they had become until I saw a statistic in the Financial Times last week, suggesting that 10% of the UK’s 10m smokers now like to ‘vape’ — inhale nicotine vapour from an electronic cigarette.
BAT has been investing in electronic cigarettes for some time, and has recently launched its own product, Vype, into the UK market.
Vaping is no less addictive than smoking, and currently has none of the troublesome regulatory restrictions that apply to selling cigarettes and smoking. You can, for example, sit inside a pub and vape, quite legally.
I’ve got a feeling that this could become a very big market indeed.

BAT shares are still a buy

Despite their fantastic run over the last decade, I believe that British American Tobacco shares still have further to run, especially in terms of income growth.
I’m not alone, either. One of the most successful UK fund managers of the last two decades, Neil Woodford, has stayed loyal to the tobacco sector despite its outperformance.
Indeed, if you’d invested £10,000 into Mr Woodford’s High Income fund in 1988, it would have been worth £193,000 at the end of 2012 — a 1,830% increase!
British American Tobacco is one of Neil Woodford’s largest holdings. If you’d like access to an exclusive Fool report about Mr Woodford’s eight largest holdings, then I recommend you click here to download this free report, while it’s still available.

A very specific group of brain cells may be a target in nicotine withdrawal therapy

Nicotine withdrawal might take over your body, but it doesn't take over your brain. The symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are driven by a very specific group of neurons within a very specific brain region, according to a report in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication. Although caution is warranted, the researchers say, the findings in mice suggest that therapies directed at this group of neurons might one day help people quit smoking.Gauloises cigarettes.
"We were surprised to find that one population of neurons within a single brain region could actually control physical nicotine withdrawal behaviors," says Andrew Tapper of the Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Tapper and his colleagues first obtained mice addicted to nicotine by delivering the drug to mice in their water for a period of 6 weeks. Then they took the nicotine away. The mice started scratching and shaking in the way a dog does when it is wet. Close examination of the animals' brains revealed abnormally increased activity in neurons within a single region known as the interpeduncular nucleus.Esse cigarettes.
When the researchers artificially activated those neurons with light, animals showed behaviors that looked like nicotine withdrawal, whether they had been exposed to the drug or not. The reverse was also true: treatments that lowered activity in those neurons alleviated nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
That the interpeduncular nucleus might play such a role in withdrawal from nicotine makes sense because the region receives connections from other areas of the brain involved in nicotine use and response, as well as feelings of anxiety. The interpeduncular nucleus is also densely packed with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors that are the molecular targets of nicotine.
It is much less clear whether the findings related to nicotine will be relevant to other forms of addiction, but there are some hints that they may.
"Smoking is highly prevalent in people with other substance-use disorders, suggesting a potential interaction between nicotine and other drugs of abuse," Tapper says. "In addition, naturally occurring mutations in genes encoding the nicotinic receptor subunits that are found in the interpeduncular nucleus have been associated with drug and alcohol dependence."

Total smoking ban considered

Currently there is a smoke free zone 10 metres around Craigavon and Daisy Hill Hospitals and within its buildings.
However patients, visitors and staff are permitted to smoke outside that zone.
The Western Trust plans to completely ban smoking anywhere on its grounds including buildings, entrances, pavements and car parks. It will include everyone including patients, service users, staff, member of the public and contracted workers.
This is a step further than the previous Western Trust policy as there will be no shelter where patients can smoke and staff will not be allowed to smoke in their cars on site.
When asked by the Mail if the trust planned a similar move, a spokesperson said: “The trust will be reviewing Its Smoke free policy in the coming year and considering future plans to extend smoke free areas on health and social care grounds.
“The trust’s current policy is smoke free buildings and a smoke free zone of 10 metres around Craigavon and Daisy Hill hospital buildings,” said the spokesperson.
Western Trust chief executive Elaine Way said: “The health of our patients and staff is a top priority for the trust.”

Twins study shows smoking ages your face faster

Here's something to think about the next time you put a cigarette to your lips: The skin around those lips is going to look older, faster.
You're also more likely to get bags under your eyes sooner. And jowls. And more wrinkles around those lips.Pall Mall cigarettes.
Researchers in Ohio studied the physical differences between the faces of nonsmokers and their twins who smoked and found confirmation of a long-held belief: Smoking does indeed age you.
The study, by researchers at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, looked at 79 sets of twins between the ages of 18 and 78 at the annual August gathering of twins in Twinsburg, Ohio. Each person had his or her picture taken by a professional photographer.
The photos were divided into two categories. The first group was 45 sets of twins in which one smoked and the other didn't. The other group was made up of smokers, but in each set, one twin had smoked at least five years longer than the other.
Two doctors and a medical student studied photographs of the twins and assigned scores to their facial features.
In the case of the first group, the judges said the smoking twin appeared older 57% of the time.
For the second set, the longer-smoking twin looked older more than 63% of the time, meaning the aging differences could set in after just five years.
"This study confirms some of what was believed in the most scientific way possible," said Dr. Bahman Guyuron, who led the research. "With longer follow-up, we believe that every smoking twin might have exhibited a difference in aging."
The study looked at other aging factors -- alcohol consumption, stress and sunscreen use, for instance -- and found they were similar in these sets of twins.
"Smoking reduces the collagen formation, results in collagen degradation and reduces the skin circulation," Guyuron said. "Additionally, nicotine reduces the skin thickness. All of these reduce skin elasticity and (cause) premature aging."
The study was published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Smoking is more deadly than thought: study

Smoking is much more deadly than previously thought.
A study of 200,000 Australians shows the habit cuts 10 years off the average smoker's life and is directly linked to two thirds of deaths in current smokers.
This is much higher than previous international estimates of 50 per cent.
The four-year analysis of health records in the Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study shows even moderate smoking is a major killer.
"We all know that smoking is bad for your health. But until now we haven't had direct large-scale evidence from Australia about just how bad it is," says study leader Professor Emily Banks, the scientific director of the 45 and Up study.
"We've been relying on evidence from other countries."
The study, supported by the National Heart Foundation in collaboration with Cancer Council NSW, shows risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked a day.
The risk of death is doubled even among those smoking an average of 10 cigarettes a day, says study co-author Associate Professor Freddy Sitas from Cancer Council NSW.
The good news, says Prof Banks, is that stopping smoking at any age reduces the risk.
Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia and kills 15,000 people a year, says the Heart Foundation's Dr Rob Grenfell, who worked on the study.
"People need to realise that smoking is a dangerous activity," he said.
"There's no safe level of smoking and there's no such thing as social smoking."

Chief: Smoking or candles started fatal Ohio fire

Smoking cigarettes or burning candles started a mobile home fire that killed five young children and their mother's boyfriend, investigators said Friday.
The cause of the fatal fire was officially listed as undetermined, but evidence found where it started pointed to the source, Tiffin fire Chief William Ennis Jr. said.
"We can't tell you exactly whether it was a candle or a cigarette, but it was one of those two, we're certain," he said.
The investigation also determined there were working smoke detectors inside the mobile home and firefighters could hear the alarms going off when they forced their way into it.
The children, ages 1 to 6, and the man died early Sunday morning in Tiffin, a city in northwestern Ohio. The children's mother, Anna Angel, was working at her fast-food job when the fire broke out.
Angel's four daughters, ages 3, 4, 5 and 6, were laid to rest in a casket following their funeral on Thursday. Her son, 1, was buried with his father, the man who died in the fire.
The fire swept through the mobile home quickly, breaking out windows and peeling some of the home's aluminum siding, while neighbors watched helplessly as firefighters found the bodies of the children.
There was heavy fire in the center of the mobile home and heavy smoke throughout it when firefighters arrived.
The four girls were found in a bedroom and hallway near the back of the trailer while the boy was under a pile of clothes near where his father was discovered, an investigation report released Friday said.
Investigators believe the man, Timothy Fresch, picked up his son and was trying to get out of the mobile home, Ennis said.
"Our feeling was that by the time he got him, the fire grew so fast he had no way to get out," Ennis said. "That was the same with the girls."
There was nothing to indicate that anything criminal took place, the report said.
The deaths of Fresch, 25, and the children, Tiara Angel, 6; Stormie Huey, 5; Trinitie Huey, 4; Sunshine Huey, 3; and Domonic Fresch, 1, shocked the rural community, about 50 miles southeast of Toledo.
Organizers of a fund to help Angel pay for the funerals and other expenses raised about $16,000 within two days of the fire. Rappers The Game and Drake pledged to donate another $22,500 after hearing about what happened.

Smokers encouraged to stub it out in October

England's eight million smokers are being encouraged to quit next month as October gets renamed Stoptober.
The campaign arrived in Sunderland today, September 20, in the form of a giant red wheel. It was being pushed by former 40-a-day smoker, Rory Coleman.
Since quitting 20 years ago, he has run nearly 800 marathons. Now he is running a marathon a day for 28 days to encourage others to give up.

The Czechs resist -Smoking ban

Irish Minister of Health James Reilly has an extraordinarily personal motivation for his mission. First, his father, who went blind after a heart attack, lay bedridden for years before he died. Then, his brother, a doctor who had tried in vain for years to stop smoking, died recently of lung cancer. “This is not a bad habit; it’s an insidious disease, and what is propagating it must be fought,” is what Reilly tells reporters. It’s the same argument he used, last spring, to persuade all of Ireland to introduce plain packaging illustrated with up-close photos of lungs ravaged by smoking for all cigarette “brands” – the second country in the world after Australia to do so.
Reilly and his government colleagues made the fight against tobacco a central theme of their recently-concluded six-month presidency of the EU [which ended June 30]. The result has been extraordinary. European health ministers decided in June that a regulation similar to Ireland’s should be in force across Europe within three years. New legislation must now be ratified by the European Parliament.

National Asthma Council Australia welcomes tobacco tax hike

The National Asthma Council Australia has backed the Pharmacy Guild of Australia in supporting the Federal Government’s proposed increase in tobacco excise. Stephen Hughes, National Asthma Council Australia Director, and a community pharmacist representing the PSA on the Council’s Board, said that raising the tobacco tax was an important initiative not only to give people with asthma a better chance of achieving good asthma control but to improve health outcomes for all Australians. As reported in Pharmacy News, last Thursday, the Government announced that it will introduce a $5.25 tax hike on a 20 pack of cigarettes. Kos Sclavos, Guild national president, welcomed the tobacco tax rise, but called for “a small fraction” of the estimated $5.3 billion the tax will create...

Thousands of fake cigarettes seized in Lincoln raids

Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire Trading Standards have seized over 20,000 illegal and fake cigarettes in Lincoln.
In July, the teams raided a number of shops across the city, with the help of Indie, a tobacco detection dog.
The dog helped officers find counterfeit cigarettes in secret, concealed compartments in four city shops, which were not named by Trading Standards.

Emma Milligan, Senior Trading Standards Officer, said: “We are urging people to lookout for fake goods, such as cigarettes and tobacco as these may pose a more significant health risk than genuine cigarettes.
“Jin Lings, which were one of the brands found at one of the shops, are illegal in the EU.
“This brand is particularly worrying to us, as it is not made to the correct legislative standards.
“As well as this, we believe that this type of cigarette caused a local house fire in Spalding in which one person died, and during the course of the inquest the Coroner raised serious concerns about the sale of illegal cigarettes in the area, hence why we have been cracking down on sales of this product.”
“As well as the potential health and safety concerns, local businesses are also suffering as they unable to compete with the cheaper prices of these illicit products.”
Now six years into his smoke-saturated labor of love, Honcho Gregory has only fueled the fire toward his culinary goals for the Twin Cities. The organizer of the Smokin Eagles International BBQ Festival appears well on his way to his dreams of making the Tonawandas the barbecue capital of the northern United States. The festival continues to gain attention. It was recently recognized by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a New York state championship barbecue event. The Kansas City and New England barbecue societies have sanctioned event during the three-day festival, as well. Gregory appreciated the support. Last year saw an attendance downturn due to inclement weather, but he expects to easily surpass the roughly 28,000 people who attended the festival in 2011. “This will probably double our size,” he said. That would be a big step for the festival, which began in 2008 at The Summit in Wheatfield. Gregory started the festival thinking it would be along the lines of the Taste of Buffalo, except devoted solely to barbecue. The event moved to Gateway Harbor in 2010 and has happily delighted canal-goers with savory barbecue smoke ever since. But Gregory doesn’t want the festivals growth to outpace its capacity. He maintains a strict cap on the number of vendors who can take part. “We’re happy where it’s at,” he said. “If it goes too big too fast, it’ll grow out of control.” There’s also been growth barbecue’s popularity as a food genre in the past few years locally — something Gregory thinks is due at least in small part to Smoking Eagles. Barbecue mainstays like Suzy-Q’s Bar-B-Que Shack in the Town of Tonawanda, One-Eyed Jack’s in Lockport and the Brickyard Pub and BBQ in the Village of Lewiston are among the top draws in their communities among diners. And Buffalo will welcome one of the Northeast’s foremost barbecue chains in October. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is set to move into the Entertainment District, and developer Mark Croce feels the restaurant can become the biggest draw in the city and one of the highest-grossing restaurants in all of Western New York. Good barbecue can be a great tourism draw, Gregory said. That’s what he’s counting on with the festival. “It’s great for the commerce in the city,” he said. “People, on the way home, they say, ‘Oh, there’s that place we heard of.’ And they come back the next weekend.”

Can taking up and then quitting smoking increase your salary? No

OK, first things first: taking up and then quitting smoking won't make you earn more. I think (well, I really hope) that the Daily Telegraph article is tongue in cheek, but even so, it's a stupid and frankly dangerous thing to say. Everyone knows smoking is a deadly habit, and that nicotine, when consumed by smoking a cigarette, is incredibly addictive.
As Homer Simpson says to Bart when he announces he will take up and then quit smoking, it's "one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do". If people were to attempt to get a pay rise by starting smoking and then stopping, they may find themselves unable to achieve the second part of their plan. But, this is a good opportunity to discuss why there might be an association between being an ex-smoker and earning more money, and what that does and doesn't mean.

Anti-Smoking Advocates Have Misused Science

Nothing drives academics crazier than when the right-wing ignores, undermines or misuses scientific evidence to achieve ideological public policy goals that they favor, whether the issue in question is global warming or abortion. But as a new paper by tobacco control proponents Ronald Bayer and Kathleen E. Bachynski of Columbia’s School of Public Health, in the respected journal Health Affairs shows, the left can play games with science too. And when it does, it needs to be called out for doing so since shaping science to fit moral goals, even laudable ones, weaken the trust and credibility of the most respected source we have for facts in public policy debates—science.

Bayer and Bachynski examined bans on smoking in public. These bans began took off in the late 1970s and now include more than 840 parks and

Ferguson stresses importance of smoking ban

Addressing the Medical Association of Jamaica's (MAJ) Symposium at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, the minister reiterated that six million people are dying annually from tobacco smoking and 600,000 from passive smoking, just from being in the same space with someone who smokes.

"My mandate as a minister of health is to ensure and protect the health of the nation. Therefore, I ask for your support because when that decision is taken, it's not going to be easy," he stated.

"Cigarette companies are very powerful but I believe that it still remains the one industry that kills its most loyal and best customers and therefore for us, we must do what we have to do," he stressed.
The Government is seeking to put into place a Tobacco Control Act that will protect citizens from the harmful effects of tobacco smoking, by prohibiting its use in public areas and workplaces.

Dr Ferguson noted that when the legislation comes into effect, Jamaica will join countries in the Caribbean such as Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname that have already passed such a statute.
He stressed that his position on the matter "is not an anti-smoker position; it is a pro-health position. Therefore we must recognize that it is not a personal thing."

Statistics from the 2008 Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey show that by the age of 16 years, 19 per cent of smokers had initiated the habit and 14.5 per cent smoke cigarettes, while 13.5 per cent admit to marijuana use.
Figures provided by the Jamaica Cancer Society reveal that approximately 80,000 young people across the world become addicted to tobacco each day and if trends continue, an estimated 250 million children and young people will die as a result of tobacco smoking-related illnesses.

The anti-smoking legislation is in keeping with Jamaica's obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

STRATEGIES OF THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY

Why has availability and use of tobacco continued in spite the medical evidence that it is a health risk?
First, people love to smoke tobacco. It is very possible that much of this is due to the stimulant received, the intoxication and the addictive property of nicotine.
Second, smoking was in-style and fashionable at several periods in time. Smoking can be termed and defined as "cool", etc.
Third, in the past many people believed that smoking could protect them from illness. This is in combination with the idea that smoking was at least not harmful. Check out for more details about cigarettes.
Finally, a nation can become 'addicted' to the revenues produced by taxes placed upon tobacco products. As noted by this quote: "As an instrument of financial policy tobacco is unique. It is not clear why this should be, but the tradition is now well established. In fact tobacco has two distinct functions, one as a consumable article and the other as a revenue earner, which at times appears to secure conflicting official treatment" (Akehurst, 1981, p15).
This paper moves beyond the history of tobacco for information and turns to the words and actions of members of the industry from speeches, booklets and handouts, the trade press and the like.
The tobacco companies have fought the opinion, data, and the interpretation of the data relating to health. They have established a set of strategies and arguments to counter the news from the medical community. How have they reacted? How have the y spent their money to continue their industry? This becomes the issue to investigate.
THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY STRATEGIES
1: SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR
The current anti-tobacco era began with medical and scientific research linking tobacco use to a variety of health problems. The first action of the industry was to dispute the research findings. This was done, and continues to be carried out, in a number of ways.
WE ARE CAUTIOUS
The image conveyed is that industry leaders are concerned professionals cautiously studying the issues. They will not let hysteria or public opinion sway or cloud their judgement. "We also believe that until scientific research can establish what actually causes the diseases with which smoking has been statistically associated, it would be unfair to advocate any law prohibiting the sale of cigarettes" (RJ Reynolds, 1987). Until these executives receive proof of the ill effects of their product they will continue as before. It is never stated, but the indications are that they operate from a classic American jurisprudence idea of 'innocent until proven guilty' view.
In spite of this open position we do see the industry avoiding some of the health issues. For example, "Tobacco Abstracts" a trade publication which offers relevant citations and abstracts to world literature on nicotiana dropped the section titled "Health" beginning with the October 1967 issue. The announcement was as follows: "(NOTE: Health section will be omitted from now on.)" No further information was offered.
MORE QUOTES AND EXAMPLES NEEDED
PROOF NEEDED
The caution shown by industry leaders makes the definition of the word "proof" crucially important. 'Proof' is the only valid basis of decision making accepted by these industry leaders. "Scientists have not proven that cigarette smoke or any of the thousands of its constituents as found in cigarette smoke cause human disease" (Tobacco Institute, 1979, p2).
Causal relationships do no more than give credence to one of several possible theories. "A hypothesis concerning the cause of disease remains merely a hypothesis until and unless conclusive laboratory and clinical proof can be found. The burden of proof must rest with those who advance the hypothesis" (Tobacco Industry, 1978, p14).
I wrote the leaders of the industry asking for a definition of proof. I was eventually told to consult a dictionary. If this is the definition that is used by the industry this is critical information since it runs in conflict with the very clear and specific definition created and defined by the authors of the 1964 Report to the Surgeon General -- and still used.
Based upon the apparent definition of cause or proof none of the 40,000 or so research studies on the tobacco and ill health link live up to the stringent requirements of industry leaders.
Statistical results are ignored as being mere numbers. They hold the position that statistics 'prove' nothing. "Smoking is a leading cause of statistics," claim those in the industry (Blair, 1979, p32). However, when it suits the argument the industry will turn to statistics.

Dayton: Use cigarette, corporate taxes for stadium

by PATRICK CONDON, Associated Press Gov. Mark Dayton proposed a new backup plan Thursday to shore up the state's lagging share of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, suggesting lawmakers use money from a tax increase on cigarettes and closing corporate income tax loopholes. Dayton's revenue commissioner, Myron Frans, unveiled the latest proposal in the House-Senate tax conference committee. It threw the contentious stadium issue back in the lap of lawmakers as they rush to wrap up this year's session by Monday. "We think this will solve the stadium financing issue," Frans said. The state's $348 million share of the $975 million downtown Minneapolis stadium was supposed to be fueled by tax revenue from new electronic betting games that last year's Legislature authorized in bars and restaurants. But sales of those games so far have badly trailed initial projections. The latest proposal calls for setting aside an estimated $24.5 million in one-time revenue that would be generated by applying a planned cigarette sales tax increase to existing cigarette inventories before the tax actually goes up — an approach Frans called a "stocking tax." Dayton is now backing a cigarette tax increase from $1.23 per pack now to $2.52, more than he initially proposed. The money from the stocking tax would be diverted to a stadium reserve fund. Smoking will not be allowed at the new Vikings stadium, due to open in time for the 2016 season.

Marlboro cigarettes is an American symbol

Marlboro Man is an American icon (symbol). The cowboy figure used to market Marlboro cigarettes captures the essence of the ideal American man. Marlboro Man showed the distinctive red Marlboro cigarette pack for almost fifty years - on billboards, in shop window displays, as well as in magazines and newspapers. But Marlboro cigarettes are not always sold with the macho image of this figure. When the Marlboro cigarettes were first introduced in 1920 they were sold to women, with the slogan "Soft as May." This approach has been successful before the Second World War (1939-45), at low sales caused Marlboro packs to be withdrawn from the market. Cigarettes were revived in 1950, and the first medical studies of smoking-cancer connection began to reach the public.

Why Tax Free Cigarettes?

What are genuine tax free cigarettes? In other words, is there anything truly like that available in United States? Legally, there are tax free cigarettes available in US, such as the ones manufactured and sold by the Seneca Nation of Indians based in western New York. But, then it is available only in selected websites/shops. In rest of the country, there is a federal tax of $3.90 levied per carton of cigarettes. That gives an idea as to why a carton of genuine Marlboro, Winston, Montclair, Salem or Camel costs around $40.

Political cover-up exposed !

It’s been a long time coming but Scotland is finally covering up tobacco displays in large shops and banning unstaffed tobacco vending machines.

We all say we want to protect children from smoking and these are restrictions on the way tobacco is sold in order to do that:
- Large, bright tobacco displays are a clear form of promotion, and it is right that supermarket adverts should go the same way as tv and newspaper adverts

Youth Awards to recognise youth groups working on tobacco

We’ve just launched this year’s Crofton Awards, celebrating the fact that more and more young people in Scotland are choosing not to smoke, and helping them to resist tobacco industry attempts to recruit a new generation of smokers.

While the tobacco companies spend millions of pounds defending their right to use attractive branding and packaging, the Crofton Awards, named after two of Scotland’s health campaign pioneers, will provide funding and other support to youth groups highlighting the truth about tobacco and health.

ASH Scotland runs the Crofton Awards in partnership with REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland), with the winners receiving cash prizes and professional support to help with their work. Recent winners have made an educational film, run a peer education project, linked with Uruguay, explored smoking as an issue amongst Muslim youth and developed resources for young people with complex learning needs.

Marlboro Red cigarette, Marlboro Gold cigarette best types in demand by most of the smokers worldwide.

The latest Scottish figures show that 97% of 13 year olds and 87% of 15 year olds are not regular smokers, the best figures since surveys began in the 1980s. But the sad fact is that tobacco companies are well aware that most smokers start before they are 18 and deliberately try to recruit young people as a new generation of smokers. They know that their brands and designs make tobacco more appealing to young people, and that is why they are desperately resisting attempts to put tobacco into plain, standardised packaging.

All the more important then that entering the Crofton Awards is easy, and free for all youth groups. We look forward to receiving another impressive field of imaginative ideas and actions – so make sure your youth group is part of it.

Tobacco retailers angered by "Roll-your-own cigarette tax "

Tobacco store owners claim their business would be affected dramatically if Washington lawmakers, desperate to cover $1 billion hole in state budget, would increase taxes for roll-your-own cigarettes. Supporters of the tax hike say it would close a loophole that unfairly benefits to tobacco-rolling machine industry. The rolling machines allow smokers roll their own cigarettes using loose tobacco and wrapping paper in cigarettes in nearly 10 minutes, at half price of pre-packaged cigarettes.

Smokers See Some Smoking Brands As Safer

Smokers See Some Smoking Brands As Safer

One in five smokers believes some brands of Lucky Strike cigarettes are safer than others, a study has found. Smokers of ”gold”, ”silver” or ”slim” cigarettes were also more likely to think their brands were less harmful. The findings highlight the power that packaging can have on risk perception, and come as the federal government prepares to introduce its plain-packaging legislation.

As part of an international study, published in the journal Addiction, researchers surveyed more than 8000 current and former smokers, including more than 2000 Australians, about their smoking beliefs.

Females were more likely to believe some brands might be less harmful while older individuals considered their cigarettes brand was safer.

More than a third of respondents falsely believed nicotine was linked to cancer, and 41 per cent believed light cigarettes were better for them.

California, Ohio Use Reserves for Tobacco Bonds

California, Ohio and Virginia will use reserve funds to pay interest and principal on bonds backed by tobacco company payments under a 1998 health-care settlement, according to a report by Herbert J. Sims & Co. Payments to the states by Altria Group Inc. (MO)’s Philip Morris unit, Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) and other companies have declined on lower U.S. cigarette sales and as the companies lose market share to tobacco manufacturers that didn’t participate in the settlement, according to Richard Larkin, director of credit analysis at Sims in Iselin, New Jersey. “Any time you see a municipal bond go to their reserve fund, it’s a significant sign of trouble,” Larkin said in a telephone interview. “It’s not an imminent default, but it’s a sign that cash flow is certainly far weaker than any of us thought.”

America’s Best Selling Brand – Marlboro

Highly recognizable brands can be priceless, but they require a permanent attention. Their importance can rise or even fall because of state management decisions, changes in the competitive environment, and the beliefs that a brand has aged beyond its useful lifetime. Very often the precise causes of decrease in Marlboro smoking brand value are mistake and arrogance. A recent study investigated nine popular brands and it found that even the most powerful tobacco products cannot survive horrible government decisions. A brand obtains its value from several main factors. And the most evident being how much it can earn. This is not the least evident with Marlboro — the best-selling smoking brand for its two owners, tobacco companies Philip Morris and Altria. The companies have encouraged the cigarette brand through hundreds of millions of dollars of advertising and tobacco marketing support.

Electronic Cigarettes History, Tobacco Market

The history of the e-cigarette is a fascinating one and one that stemmed from a Chinese pharmacist and inventor, who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, being determined not to die of cancer the way his father did. He set out to find an alternative.
The electronic cigarette, alternatively known as an e-cig or e-cigarette, is an inhaler that looks like a regular cigarette but which uses a vaporizer that produces a pressurized jet of an aerosol mist that looks like real cheap Pall Mall cigarette smoke. This vapor dilutes the nicotine by using propylene glycol, a food additive used in consumer products and drug treatments. The e-cigarette has many health advantages because it is tobacco free, ash free, tar free, carbon monoxide free and odorless.
His education was in Chinese medicine using herbal remedies. He infused the propylene glycol with a flavoring and genuine nicotine to make it feel and taste like a genuine cigarette. He utilized a disposable cartridge in plastic which holds the liquid and provides a mouthpiece.
First introduced to the domestic market in China in May 2004, Lik’s company changed its name to Ruyan, which means “resembling smoking”, and began exporting in 2005-2006. In 2007, the company received the first international patent. These electronic cigarettes were introduced in the United States in 2006-2007.
